Here is a recipe for a slimy, putty-like substance that is fun for kids to make and play with. At Christmastime we made a bunch of kits with all the ingredients and instructions for inexpensive and easy friend gifts. The flubber will stay soft and pliable if you store it in a plastic container. You could add plastic bugs or reptiles to the kits as well so there are creatures to hide in the flubber.
For each kit you need:
- 1 4 oz. bottle of white glue
- 1/2 teaspoon of Borax in a small envelope or container
- 2 plastic spoons
- plastic cup
- printed instructions, below
- plastic container large enough to hold all of the above items
Step 1
Take everything out of the container. Pour the glue into the bottom of the container. Fill the empty glue container with warm water, put the lid back on, and shake. Pour into the container with the glue and stir with a spoon to mix. Add food coloring if you wish.
Step 2
Pour the packet of Borax (1/2 teaspoon) into the plastic cup. Add 1/4 cup of warm water to the plastic cup and stir with the other spoon.
Step 3
Slowly pour the Borax water into the glue mixture while stirring. A big glob will form. Keep stirring until you’ve added all the water and then knead the mixture with your hands. Discard any remaining water in the container. Dry out the container and use it to store your flubber.

I have done something similar with my kids and they love playing with it! Really enjoyed visiting your blog, I shall return again. Mandy x
oh! I remember making this in elementary school for a science project. So fun!
What a fantastic gift idea, I love it! I've never tried making this but I'm really excited to. I'll be linking to this in an upcoming kid's roundup, thanks so much for the fabulous idea!
Great idea, as always. You come up with such neat stuff. We've made our own flubber stuff before but the kit thing is very cool. I know my boys (and girl) would like this. Thanks.
Rachel...Awesome, thanks for the link!
Ellen...You are so sweet!
Okay now, Jessica, having boys is neat! I have never done this and will now have to give it a go. The grandson is just about to the flubber age and we will have some fun!
Try this one too: http://www.paperandcloth.com/2008/06/we-love-flubber.html
This one worked great for me.
Thanks to your post, I have been making Flubber kits for all my sons' birthday party favours. Thanks for the detailed info! I have done my own post on Flubber (with credit given to Lost Button Studios, of course).
Thanks, Kristin!
We just made this and my daughter LOVES it. Thanks!
How long does it store for?
saw this on pinterest! Can I ask where you got the cute container?
Naomi - it's been a while but I think I got them at a dollar store. :)
