Thanks for the great advice on organizing photos. I'm using all of the ideas and I appreciate the words of encouragement. Now that the initial tornado is over I'm feeling better about things.
I started by separating the photos, 3D keepsakes, and papers. This actually didn't take too long since, for the most part, they were all in separate containers already, but it helped so much to consolidate them. I now have a few big boxes of things instead of a whole bunch of smaller containers.

Next I re-purposed some photo file boxes I was using to store craft supplies so I didn't have to buy new boxes. Then I decided to make some index tabs for the file boxes since they didn't come with any. Here are the instructions:

1. Cut cards that fit into your boxes. Punch a large scalloped oval and a smaller plain oval from decorative paper (or use whatever punches you already have).

2. Cut the smaller plain oval in half and glue one piece to the larger oval using a glue stick. Glue the larger oval to the top of the card.

3. As you make more cards, stagger the tabs across the top.

4. Voila! Your own index tabs. This would work for making tabs for binders too.
Now my next step is to take a handful of photos when I have time and organize them into the boxes, separating them with the tabs. I'm going to edit the photos along the way by throwing out ones that are bad...like blurry, eyes closed, no people in them (photos of animals at the zoo or signs at a theme park), etc.

Oh, those labels are so cute! It makes me want to do the same thing. Too bad I got sick of having a ton of photos I never looked at, so I scanned them all into my computer and tossed the originals.
very cute.
i need to organize my stuff big time.
Way neat Jessica! And I think I can handle the sorting like that too! Let's begin again.
Great idea! They look fantastic!
pretty, pretty. i love them. this MIGHT be significantly easier than the millions of hours i am spending scanning all of my photos to digital files. *sigh*
Have I told you I like your handwriting? :-) Great tabs!
These are beautiful. You come up with such neat ideas! I then scrolled down to see your post for which theses beauties were being used for and I groaned because this is a very very familiar site. I have a whole slew of photos from before digital that need to be arranged. I am not a scrapbook kind of girl,so the photo box idea and the tabs are right up my alley. Like that kraft-paper photo box. Very nice.
Love the tabs! I need to go through and throw out photos too - but for some reason it's soooo hard - even if it's a bad photo! I always think "maybe I can use this for a craft or a collage or something" but I never do! I'm going to have to just be brave and throw away!
those are so darling! i'll have to try those.
those are great! but i would never go to so much work, i'm way too lazy. you need to make some up & sell them... pre-made and all i'll have to do is label them myself!
Darling!
Love this idea! Your blog is wonderful and your photography is amazing.
Hi, I found your blog through the today's creative blog and I'm so happy! These tabs are so cute! I never thought something so functional could be cute - great idea. I saved your blog to my reader so I can keep up with you here in Costa Rica.
Pura vida,
Kate
