We decided to do shrink plastic keychains for the Valentine's day craft in B's class (thanks for the keychain idea, Robyn). Just a warning, if you take a toaster oven and permanent markers into a third grade class, prepare to be swarmed. I overheard someone say, "dude, this rocks" and got lots of thank yous so I think they really enjoyed the project.
Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

What a cute idea!!! You are so creative...
Great idea! Third graders getting all excited about this and saying Dude this rocks, just makes me laugh. How cool!
Great idea! So, did you let everyone in the class do their own? and where did you get the plastic?
Yes, they each got to make two (I cut the plastic into 3" x 4" rectangles with a 1/2" hole in the top and rounded the corners on them the night before so they were all ready to go). I got the plastic at a craft store.
Also, I got the beaded chain and connectors at Home Depot in the lighting department, incase anyone is interested in that info.
Those turned out so cute! How neat. I've got some shrink film coming in the mail. I can hardly wait. :-)
I like this idea. Even the hand-drawn 'u' looks like its smiling!
BTW - come and see that you've won a 'runner up' cat.
What a fabulous idea! Would you ever consider being a either a contributor or guest writer over at Blissfully Domestic? I'm one of the editors of the Creative Bliss channel and would *heart* to have you join us! Let me know!
p.s. I'm still lovin' the stuff I won from Kelly's giveaway ;)
Hi Sylvia...thanks so much! Sending you an email.
How adorable these are! My girls & I will make some right away!
I was also gonna ask where you got the chain, but I just read you got them at Home Depot. I would've NEVER guessed. Thanks for being so awesomely crafty!
I hear you can use clear plastic 'to go' boxes as shrink plastic too!

i'm loving these!
Okay so call me weird but as a child I didn't get a chance to play with Shrinky Dinks so do you draw on the plastic first then put them in the toaster..Would love to have full directions on this project! Thanks for the tip on where to get the keychain part!
Hi...thanks for the question! I don't remember the exact settings I used and it might differ depending on the brand or type of shrink plastic you buy. The instructions for Shrinky Dinks say to bake at 325 degrees for 1 to 3 minutes. Hope this helps!
Oops, forgot to answer your first question. Yes, you cut the plastic into shapes and color on it (or vice versa), then bake it to shrink. The instructions link above will have more info.
